NEW: As of 12:00pm, 5 April 2003, CarpePPT has been completely re-written and simplified. To download the new software, right-click on one of the following:

CarpePpt
version 3.1

CarpePpt is a simple piece of software that, when used with your PowerPoint 2000 presentation, will record the timing of the slide changes, extract your slides into a set of GIF images, and even help you upload these to a server. CarpePpt makes it very easy to record web presentations using PowerPoint 2000.

Obtaining CarpePpt
Prerequisites: To run CarpePpt, you will need to have Microsoft PowerPoint 2000 installed on your computer, and Visual Basic for Applications. VBA comes with Microsoft Office 2000.

To get CarpePpt, all you need to do is RIGHT-CLICK on the link below to download the single file called carpe.ppt. When you open it with PowerPoint, you will be given easy directions to set it up.

RIGHT-CLICK for version 3.1: DOWNLOAD

Confused by the options when right-clicking? We were too! NB: When you open carpe.ppt with PowerPoint, it will immediately notify you that the document contains macros. You should choose "Enable Macros" to enable the CarpePpt macro. You should usually be very cautious about opening unknown documents containing macros, but as long as you obtain the file directly from our site, you can trust it.

Instructions

These are the same instructions you will find in the carpe.ppt file
  1. When opening carpe.ppt, you will be notified that it contains macros. You should enable macros.
  2. Make sure that both your presentation and carpe.ppt are open, and that your presentation is currently selected.
  3. To load the macro, click on Tools --> Macro --> Macros (or press ALT+F8).
  4. Under the Macro in: pulldown menu, select CarpePPT or All Open Presentations, then click Run
  5. When you run the CarpePpt macro for the first time, you don’t need to do anything, just click Continue.
  6. Give the presentation (press F5)
  7. When the presentation is complete, CarpePpt pops up again.
  8. Click Save Timing/Slides (this creates the lecture.xml file containing the timing information, and extracts the slides as GIF images)
  9. To send the Lecture Object to the WLAP server, click Upload (or you can wait to do this step later)
